Symposium: William Etty (2011)

In conjunction with the exhibition William Etty: Art and Controversy at York Art Gallery
25 November 2011

A symposium on the artist William Etty RA (1787-1849) was convened on Friday 25 November 2011 by Dr Sarah Burnage (University of York) and Laura Turner (York Art Gallery), the curators of the exhibition William Etty: Art and Controversy, which ran at York Art Gallery from 25 June 2011 – 22 January 2012.

The symposium began with a tour of the exhibition, after which Etty scholars gave presentations on individual paintings.  The contributors to the exhibition catalogue also talked about their research on Etty, and the symposium concluded with a roundtable discussion, unpacking the impact and legacies of the William Etty project, a collaboration between York Art Gallery and the History of Art Department.
