Next year York Minster will be celebrating its 1400th anniversary. To celebrate, the Department of History of Art at the University of York, in partnership with the Minster, is hosting an afternoon symposium on Thursday 2 July, reflecting on sculpture at the Minster.
To date, scholarship on the Minster has mainly focussed on the architectural fabric and stained glass, but the Minster houses an array of world-class sculpture across a long durée and a variety of media, ranging from bronze through wood and brass to a host of marbles, as well as sculptural genres including relief, standing portrait statues, and Biblical reredos.
The afternoon will feature an array of short papers, with presentations ranging from the Chapter House and Screen of Kings through early modern monuments to the imperial memorials of the long nineteenth century.
