Public Talk: York Art Gallery Artwork of the Month (2024)

York Art Gallery, 10 April 2024

Professor Jeanne Nuechterlein (Department of History of Art, University of York) gave the Friends of York Art Gallery’s Artwork of the Month lunchtime lecture on Wednesday 10 April 2024. Her selected artwork was The Road to Calvary by Marten van Cleve (c. 1527 – 1581).

Introduction

Professor Jeanne Nuechterlein of the History of Art Department, University of York, discusses a favourite painting from the Gallery’s collection. The identity of the artist has long been debated but through her research Jeanne has found the probable solution.

In 2023 Professor Jeanne Nuechterlein (University of York) proposed Marten van Cleve as the probable answer to the mystery of who painted 'The Road to Calvary', having found what appears to be a preparatory drawing for the painting in the Teylers Museum in the Netherlands (object no. KT 2015 020). Professor Nuechterlein has also tentatively dated the painting to c.1565. (ArtUK)
