Public Lecture: York Art Gallery Artwork of the Month (2024)

York Art Gallery, 12 June 2024

Danae Reaves-Bey Browne, the recipient of the Friends of York Art Gallery Studentship for 2023–24, gave the Gallery’s Artwork of the Month lunchtime talk for June 2024, on Wednesday 12 June. Her selected artwork was Winter Sea (1941) by Paul Nash (1889–1946).

Introduction

‘I will place Paul Nash’s Winter Sea within his wider artistic practice. Through an engagement with events from the artist’s life in the 1920s and 30s (when he produced the work), the talk will examine the painting’s fractured aesthetic. This will be followed by an exploration of the work’s relation to Nash’s landscapes from the Great War.’ (Danae Reaves-Bey Browne)

An edited version of Danae’s talk can be downloaded via the Friends of York Art Gallery website.
