Conference - Sir Richard Wallace and His Age: Connoisseurs, Collectors & Philanthropists (2018)

The Wallace Collection, London, 15-16 November 2018

Professor Anthony Geraghty (University of York) was an invited speaker at the two-day conference held from Thursday 15 to Friday 16 November 2018 at the Wallace Collection, London, ‘Sir Richard Wallace and His Age: Connoisseurs, Collectors & Philanthropists’. The conference was held in conjunction with the museum’s ‘flagship’ exhibition Sir Richard Wallace: The Collector, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Wallace Collection’s founder.

Dr Xavier Bray, Director of the Wallace Collection, gave the Welcome. Professor Geraghty presented a paper on ‘An Imperial Collection in Exile: The Empress Eugénie in Farnborough, 1880-1920’, as part of the first day’s theme. This considered the impact on the Anglo-French art market of the political and social upheavals in France in 1870–71, including the dispersal of collections and the movement of collectors, as well as the curatorship of private art collections. See the full programme for further information about the conference.
