Symposium - James Paine, Architect (2017)

Doncaster Mansion House, 25 March 2017

On Saturday 25 March 2017, the Friends of Doncaster Mansion House hosted an event at Doncaster Mansion House to launch the James Paine Festival, marking the tercentenary of the architect’s birth. The James Paine Festival has been organised by the Friends in partnership with the University of York,  Doncaster Civic Trust and Doncaster Council.

The launch included public guided tours of the Mansion House and the opening of a new permanent exhibition about Paine.

The Mansion House ballroom, designed by Paine, was a fitting setting for the symposium held in the afternoon on James Paine and Georgian Architecture.

The event was launched by Councillor David Nevett, civic mayor of Doncaster, and chaired by the Venerable Bob Fitzharris, chairman of the Friends.

George Norton (MA Partnership Awardee, University of York) spoke about Paine and his work, and gave background to the exhibition. The keynote speaker was John Goodall (author and architectural editor, Country Life) and the other speakers were Carolyn Dalton (Heritage Services Manager, Doncaster Council) and Helen Hutchinson (Senior architect, Donald Insall Associates).
